LIVESTOCK | EUROPE | UHF RFID RFID-Based Reindeer Herding Management in Europe

Background

Amid the trends of the Internet of Things and digitization, the advantages of RFID technology in livestock management are becoming increasingly prominent. Many farming institutions are utilizing RFID technology to manage animals. A livestock management institution in Europe has also chosen to deploy an intelligent RFID Herding management solution based on the Chainway C72 RFID handheld terminal. This solution aims to digitize and track the reindeer Herding process, enhancing both the efficiency and quality of livestock farming.

Challenges

  1. Unlike traditional animal farming, reindeer are grazed, making the process more complex than keeping livestock in enclosures. The use of paper records results in delayed information collection and inconvenient management.
  2. Material management during the breeding process is disorderly. Timely and accurate data on the procurement, consumption, and inventory of feed and medicines cannot be obtained.
  3. Herders cannot instantly access the status and location information of reindeer, leading to delayed responses when anomalies occur.
  4. Lack of data analysis means managers cannot fully understand the feeding status of reindeer, leading to low management efficiency and high costs.
  5. Conventional equipment fails to operate under the harsh conditions of the tundra.

Solution

To address the challenges faced under the harsh conditions of the tundra, a solution based on the Chainway C72 RFID reader was developed in collaboration with partners. RFID chips are applied to the ear tags of reindeer, containing identity information. During subsequent processes such as feeding, weighing, inventory, breeding, and vaccine administration, the Chainway C72 RFID reader can quickly identify, track, and exchange data with the ear tags over a considerable distance, achieving efficient intelligent farming management.

Results

  1. Transitioning from paper-based records to digitalization has expedited and simplified veterinary services.
  2. Veterinarians find it easier to perform tasks such as tagging, vaccine administration, and blood sampling on reindeer in the tundra.
  3. Herders can instantly access the status and location information of reindeer, enhancing management efficiency.
  4. Reindeer profiles have been established, facilitating traceability and lineage analysis, preventing inbreeding, and promoting superior breeding.
  5. The vast amount of data collected during the feeding process also provides a basis for elevating the level of scientific feeding.
  6. Accurate management of reindeer has effectively boosted the production efficiency and economic benefits of the breeding farm.
