Livestock Identification and Management in Australia

Background
Efficient livestock identification is essential for managing animal movements across farms, yards, and handling facilities. When large groups of cattle or sheep need to be received, dispatched, loaded, or moved between areas, identifying animals individually can require significant time and manual handling.

UTAGS, an Australian livestock identification solution provider, developed an RFID-based system to make animal identification faster and less disruptive. Using RFID ear tags, fixed readers, and strategically positioned antennas, the system automatically identifies animals as they move through designated gateways. The Chainway URA4 Fixed RFID Reader provides the RFID reading capability behind this workflow.

Challenge
  • Large groups of animals: Farms and livestock yards need to identify many cattle or sheep efficiently during receiving, dispatch, and movement between areas.
  • Individual scanning takes time: Identifying animals one by one can slow loading, unloading, and other livestock handling operations.
  • Animals remain in motion: RFID tags need to be captured reliably as groups of animals move naturally through gateways and raceways.
  • Different site layouts: Reading zones vary across farms and yards, requiring flexible antenna deployment to provide effective RFID coverage.
  • Animal welfare: Excessive individual handling can increase stress, making a less intrusive identification process highly valuable.

Solution
UTAGS integrated the Chainway URA4 Fixed RFID Reader into its livestock identification system. RFID ear tags identify individual animals, while antennas installed around gateways or raceways capture tag data as groups of cattle or sheep pass through. The collected identification data can then be transmitted to the management system for livestock records and tracking.

  • Fast group identification: With a read rate of up to 1,300+ tags/s, the URA4 supports rapid identification when multiple tagged animals move through a reading zone.
  • Flexible antenna deployment: The URA4 provides four RFID antenna channels and supports different antenna types, enabling reading zones to be configured for different livestock handling environments.
  • Reliable RFID performance: Built on Impinj E Series reader ICs with Gen2X support, the URA4 provides stable UHF RFID performance for demanding animal identification workflows.
  • Continuous fixed reading: Gateway-based deployment enables RFID tags to be captured as animals move through the reading area, reducing the need for individual manual scanning.

Result
  • Faster livestock processing: Groups of cattle or sheep can be identified efficiently during receiving, dispatch, loading, and unloading.
  • Less manual handling: Automated RFID reading reduces the need to stop and scan animals individually.
  • Lower animal stress: Animals can move more naturally through the identification area with less interruption and handling.
  • More efficient animal tracking: Captured RFID data provides timely identification records as livestock move through farms and yards.
  • A more scalable identification workflow: UTAGS can use fixed RFID reading to manage larger groups of livestock efficiently across different operating environments.
