Streamlining Waste Collection in Singapore

Background
Municipal waste collection involves frequent stops, repeated handling of waste bins, and daily operations across different collection areas. Accurately identifying individual bins during collection can help waste management operators maintain clearer records and improve the efficiency of routine field operations.
In Singapore, a municipal waste collection project introduced RFID technology to improve waste bin identification during daily collection operations. The solution uses the Chainway URA4 Fixed RFID Reader installed on waste collection vehicles to automatically identify RFID-tagged bins.

Challenge
  • Large-scale collection operations: Municipal waste collection involves numerous bins distributed across different locations, making individual identification and verification a repetitive and time-consuming task.
  • Time-consuming manual recording: Identifying bins and recording collection details manually adds extra work for collection crews and increases the risk of missing or inaccurate information.
  • Difficulty verifying collection activities: Without accurate records of individual bin collections, it can be difficult to confirm whether specific bins have been emptied or investigate missed collection reports.
  • Interruptions to routine collection: Collection crews must repeatedly move, lift, and empty bins, leaving limited opportunities for additional identification and recording tasks without slowing down the workflow.

Solution
The project deploys the Chainway URA4 Fixed RFID Reader on waste collection vehicles to enable automatic identification of RFID-tagged bins during routine collection. By capturing tag information without requiring individual manual scanning, the solution helps streamline daily collection activities and supports more consistent data recording.
  • Streamlined collection workflows: The URA4 enables automatic, contactless identification of tagged bins during collection, reducing manual scanning steps and minimizing interruptions to existing operations.
  • Efficient identification at scale: With a read rate of 1,300+ tags/s, the URA4 supports rapid RFID tag identification, helping collection crews handle repeated identification tasks efficiently.
  • Reliable RFID performance: Equipped with a self-developed UHF module based on Impinj E Family reader ICs and supporting Gen2X, the URA4 delivers stable RFID reading performance for routine waste collection applications.
  • Flexible system integration: With interfaces including RS232 and RJ45, the URA4 can connect with compatible equipment and applications, supporting the integration of RFID identification data into waste collection management workflows.

Result
  • More accurate collection records: RFID-based identification reduces reliance on manual data entry, providing more consistent information for waste collection management.
  • Improved collection traceability: Individual bin identification makes it easier to associate captured tag information with specific waste bins, supporting collection verification and follow-up inquiries.
  • Smoother collection operations: Automated identification reduces repetitive manual tasks, helping collection crews maintain an efficient workflow during daily collection activities.
