Government Deployed LF Technology to Supervise the Animal Husbandry in India

In the context of food security, it is of critical importance to supervise the animal husbandry sector in order to supervise the animal husbandry sector to get optimum results. Gujarat, a state in western India is executing this mammoth task with a livestock tracking project, powered by RFID. The Gauseva and Gauchar Vikas Board aim at establishing a technology-driven dairy farming project.
Livestock which is and has been a flourishing sector in India for the past decades is majorly run by small marginal farmers and landless labors. And thus, it has been over the years an unorganized sector. In order to device a modern technological approach for a more organized model, the Government of Gujarat has deployed an RFID based project to track the cows in the Livestock tracking system.

Solution
The project involves an RFID tag, an RFID reader and a central server. Neno Kernel Ltd. (Neno Kernel) implemented the system and Chainway Information Technology Co. Ltd. (Chainway) provided them with handheld computers to read the implanted RFID tag (which is like a unique identification number for a particular animal) in cows. This tag is usually either inserted in the skin of the animal or pierced in the ear. This tag gives access to animals’ profile which includes its date of birth, breed, milk production, owner’s name, health and migration profile. GGVB uploads all this information on a computerized database which makes it easier to access the detailed information of each animal in an organized manner.

Effects
  • There was one particular shortcoming with regard to LF tags, as these tend to have a limited range thus making it very risky to bring it near the cow. This issue was resolved using a mechanism where LF stick antenna is affixed to a 2.5 feet long rod. This mechanism was intelligently customized by Chainway that earned itself a good reputation to provide a successful project for Livestock tracking. The above-mentioned mechanism would also include affixing the LF stick to Chainway’s handheld reader. With the assistance of this stick antenna affixed to a handheld computer, the tag could be read from a distance with 100% accuracy.
  • With 100% accuracy, information about cows can be recorded and retrieved at any point of time on the database which can be traced back to the exact origin for enhanced cattle breeding, disease control, and trade and food safety.
