Edible Bird’s nest tracking with RFID Technology

Background
Swiftlets are the birds which create a nest by solidified the saliva. These nests are edible and mostly available in Malaysia. China is the great importer of these nests because of high respect in Chinese culture. Swiftlet’s nests are believed to have high medical value and exquisite flavour which is why this the most expensive bird's related products consumed by humans. In Asia, the approx. price of the nest is considered to be US$2500 per kg. Due to a high price, demand and limited supply, it attracts many criminals to supply counterfeit products. To block the supply of counterfeit products, the bird’s manufacturers of Malaysia has implemented a trackable system through which consumer can track the complete process of nest development and assure about the delivery of a pure product.

Challenges
  1. The consumer loses confidence in purchasing this product. As a large number of counterfeit products has been circulated in the market.
  2. The duplicate products are developed in great perfection that a common customer could not distinguish the pure nest.
  3. These products have low productivity due to undefine production process and less monitoring.

Solutions
After nest manufacturers contacted Chainway about the above mention issues. Chainway corporation came up with an RFID technology which played an important role in the deployment of a tracking system. This technology contains RFID PDA and UHF tags. At the beginning of the process, a UHF tag is attached in the bird’s raw nest. The PDA scan and store all the information about the tagged nest in every production cycle form collection, processing to final dispatch of products. The PDA store all the information and shared with the main database of the manufacturer. Under this process, a food inspector can inspect the product any time just by waving the UHF reader in the store area. This confirms the purity of product by obtaining the information such as production date, weight, collection site etc. On the other side, a consumer can also check the genuine product just by entering the unique code of product via computer.

Effects
  1. The new system has brought transparency to the system. Now a customer can check the product online by entering the product code mention on the packet. This code provides information such as manufacturer name, batch number, raw material etc which can be considered as a proof of genuine product.
  2. The system monitors the complete process of production, processing, and selling of nest. The management can improve production by analyzing the key information stored in the system during production.
  3. The genuine manufacture has established its image and obtained the trust of the consumer in the market.
