Implementation of RFID Technology for Cigarette Industry

Background
China is the biggest producer of tobacco products in the world. China contains 35% in tobacco and 32% market share in cigarette manufacturing. Which is why China has also become a leading consumer of these products. Tobacco manufacturing is a long process which involves a large number of people. So, it creates many loopholes to take unfair advantage by the people. Now a day’s cigarette industry is switching to a barcode and RFID technology to tap these loopholes and increase profitability. Recently, an enterprise in Shandong province has implemented barcode and RFID based solution to monitor the cigarette manufacturing process.

Challenges
  1. There is a lack of transparency on the part of the purchasing agent. Sometimes, these agents benefit the tobacco growers by mixing the good quality tobacco with an inferior one and eventually affect the quality of finished product and interest of cigarette manufacturer.
  2. Manipulation starts with the procurement process of tobacco. There is no technical method to grade the raw material.
  3. Manufacturers have inefficient data on tobacco growers. They cannot identify which raw material is coming from which grower.
  4. manufacturers do not have a proper inventory management process.

Solution
After analyzing the issues of manufacturers, Chainway came up with C4050 UHF RFID reader. This device was integrated with a UHF RFID reader which could read RFID tags. The aim was to streamline the whole process. Each tobacco growers were assigned an RFID card which contains detail information about the grower. The C4050 device could read and write the grower’s records at the time of supply of tobacco, ranking for raw material and inventory management at the manufacturing facility. All the records capture with the help of RFID handheld devices was recorded in the main database and could be accessed by the manufacturer in real-time. This technology solution had provided smooth tracking from raw material to a finished cigarette whole process.

Effects
  1. Now, it is easy to classify the tobacco on the basis of grades, rating, and weight which has further reduced the chances of cheating.
  2. Tradition method of tracking has transformed into real-time monitoring of the entire production process.
  3. The invoice generation and grower identification have become easier with C4050 reader.
  4. Enterprise and brand images have improved a lot by controlling the supply of inferior products and provide the best quality product desired by consumers.
