Tire Tracking Solution with RFID Technology

Background
China is the world’s largest market in automobile production and it has exceeded the total automobile production of the European Union or the United States and Japan combined. Recently, the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (CMIIT) has passed a new guideline for tire grading standard and Management for tire labeling. Under this guideline, an automobile manufacturer is required to track the tire using RFID technology so that it can be easily replaced in case of any problem under the guarantee period.

Challenges
Earlier, China’s automobile industry was using barcode technology in tires for tracking purpose, which had the following issues-
  1. Barcode printed on the tires could easily covered with dirt which made them useless.
  2. Printed barcode could be damaged by scratching.
  3. The data stored in barcode was permanently and could not be modified as per requirement.
  4. The reading speed of barcode is very slow as compared to RFID tags.

Solution
One of the leading tire manufacturers in China approached Chainway corporation and selected C4050 RFID mobile computer to replace barcode system with RFID technology in the tire manufacturing process. Each tag was written with a unique information correspondent to a specific tire. The information includes manufacturer name, date of manufacturing, expiry, size etc. A worker in the production line could read and write the information on tires with the help of RFID mobile computer. This data was shared with the concern automobile manufacturer to assign the tires with a specific vehicle.

Effects
  1. RFID technology has provided multiple solutions. The RFID chip attached with the tire has all the information such as manufacturer name, size, model number etc. This data can be captured with the help of RFID mobile computer. A worker in a warehouse can easily manage stock with the device. On the way, RFID has reduced cases of theft and fraud by identifying the tires with mobile computers.
  2. This technology can track the information in real-time. Now the inspection process has become very easy, fast and accurate.
