RFID Solution for Indian Buses

Background
Public Transportation is the life-line for Indian metro cities, especially for cities like Mumbai, Bangalore & Delhi, etc. With the economic development in cities, more and more people are now traveling through buses daily. For the past few years, public transport in India has been facing some bigger challenges such as overcrowded buses, inappropriate ticket checking, manual method of ticket issue, increase in freeloader, etc. Thus, public transport such as buses is already running in losses. So, this is the high time when affordable technology can be deployed to overcome these issues.

Challenges
  1. Ticket checking is a challenging task for conductors. Manual checking takes a lot of time and sometimes it is not possible to check the passenger ticket in an overcrowded bus which may give the opportunity for freeloader to evade the ticket.
  2. Depo administration could not track and supervise the buses in real-time
  3. The conductor could not be supervised if he is avoiding the ticket checking process.

Solutions
Currently, Chainway’s C4050 mobile terminal is the best suitable device with RFID technology which can be integrated with required software to provide intelligent card reading, route management and conductor supervision for public buses.

Application Details

Bus Card Reading
A Bus card is issued to the passenger. When a passenger board a bus, he just needs to share this card with a bus conductor to buy a ticket.  The conductor equipped with Chainway C4050 mobile computer can read the cards and finishes the ticket issuing process without manually write or type anything.
 
Bus Route Supervision
C4050 mobile computer can also be used for bus tracking. The device is integrated with a GPS which can share the real-time location of the bus with the concerned department.
 
Conductor Management
Fare collection and matching with the ticket issued is a challenge for conductors. In a manual process it usually ends up with amount mismatch and the conductor has to bear that loss. But C4050 can simplify that task by calculating the ticket fare, deduct payment and share the data with the server in Realtime. The device has not only avoided the mistake but also save a lot of time as well.

Effects
  1. This device has brought more convenience for passenger and conductors. Passengers do not have to wait for the ticket and the conductor can check the tickets very easily.
  2. With the implementation of mobile computers, errors ratio has declined significantly which further improve the operational efficiency of bus management.
  3. Collection report can be shared directly on the server. Thus, management achieves a great return on investment.
