RFID Solution to Ease Traffic Congestion at Toll Plazas

Background
Jiangxi Provincial Expressway Investment Group Co. Ltd. is located at Jiangxi province in southeast China. The company is a well-known authority for the expressway. For past, sometimes the company was facing challenges related to delay in toll collection and traffic congestion at toll booths. Thus, the company was seeking a secure and reliable solution which can facilitate the automatic toll collection effectively without any traffic congestion.

Challenges
  1. The manual toll collection process is slow and time-consuming, which lets the vehicles wait for a long time.
  2. The company has many toll plazas in different areas. In the absence of real-time data, management could not access to daily consolidate collection form all the tolls.

Solution
As per JPEIG requirement, Chainway developed an RFID solution for toll plazas. JPEIG selected Chainway’s C5000 mobile computer for deployment at the toll booth. These devices had HF RFID module, Wireless connection and also integrated with toll company software application. Value cards were issued to the vehicle’s drivers which contained all the relevant information about a person and associated vehicle. An operator at toll booth could read the driver value card through mobile computers from a distance and auto collected the toll charges immediately.

Effects
  1. Facilitate electronic money transfer instead of cash has reduced the traffic congestion at toll plazas.
  2. Real-time access to information is possible now. The operator uses a mobile computer to scan and collect the amount which can be transmitted to the main database immediately through the 3G network. It helps the management to manage the everyday collection.
  3. The company has increased its revenue with fast collection process and also achieve a good return on investment.
