RFID Based Electric Meter Solution

Background

EVN (Electricity of Vietnam) also known as Vietnam Power Group is one of the biggest power company in Vietnam. The company has established a 21883 k.m. transmission network across the country. Recently EVN has also generated 23579 MW electricity. All these achievements rank the company in the third position among Vietnam’s power sector companies. With a large number of customers, the company faced many challenges in the manual process of meter reading. Thus, the company replaces the manual process into an automatic meter reading solution.

Challenge
  1. EVN had a large customer base and manual process. Due to which workers were under pressure to complete the meter reading job effectively and within a time limit.
  2. The electric meter was installed inside the resident houses. Every time workers had to enter the house to note down the meter reading. It disturbed the customer and his privacy.
  3. In the absence of real-time data, effective supervision of worker was not possible for company management.
  4. Meter readings were noted down on paper manually which leads to errors and manipulation from worker end.
Solutions
After consultation and discussion with many consultants, EVN chooses Chainway’s C5000 mobile computer for automatic meter reading process. The solution contained a combination of barcode, RFID, Wi-Fi, and GPS technology. C5000 mobile computer had all these features which helped EVM’s workers to read the barcode and RFID tag on the meter and captured the data without any physical attachment with a meter. Mobile computers were connected with EVN database through Wi-Fi network so that scanned data could be updated in the main database in real-time.

Effects
  1. The company ensured customer privacy with the new solution. Workers can read the meter through RFID module from a distance and do not need to enter the customer premises
  2. The automatic system not only reduces the operational cost by employing fewer workers but also bring significant accuracy.
