Infrastructure’s Inspection with RFID Technology

BACKGROUND
Hongkong, Shenzhen and Dong Guan cities get water and energy supply from a common source called Guangdong Yue Gang water supply company. The company also is known as “Yue Gang” was founded in 2000. However, Yue Gang has been supplying water to residents of these cities but they are many challenges as well. In this case study, we are sharing the challenges, solution, and effect of new technology adoption in the meter reading process.

CHALLENGES
  1. Company has a big network and infrastructure which is difficult to be monitored manually. So, the identification of any possible malfunctioning was not possible in many cases.
  2. Yue Gang depends mainly on paperwork. All the data related to inspection is recorded on paper which is time-consuming and error-prone.
  3. In the absence of real-time record and cross-checking system, worker supervision can’t be performed effectively.
  4. Management has no control and knowledge of the present condition of infrastructure.
SOLUTIONS
The company required an intelligent system which could record the data automatically, supervise the workers and also provide effective data for analysis. Thus, Yue Gang found Chainway mobile computer with RFID technology.

APPLICATION DETAILS

Intelligent Inspection
Every equipment installed in the infrastructure were attached with an RFID tag, which carried all the necessary information about the equipment such as equipment type, expiry date, date of service, etc. An inspector with RFID mobile computer could capture the equipment data just by scanning the RFID tag and shared with company database immediately. This technology made the inspection process fast, accurate and real-time.

Inspection Order Arrangement
The data of inspection could be available any time. It became easy to add or delete any equipment items by any inspector based on the working condition of equipment. Thus, an inspector can be interchanged easily.

Workload Supervision
Worker supervision was easy because now mobile computer could share the real-time location of worker with the company’s administration.

Data Transmission
Chainway mobile computer was integrated with a wireless network which helped the inspector to share the data with administration through a 3G network. In case of any malfunctioning, the information can be uploaded and share with the administration for immediate action.
Data Analysis
Mobile computer stored all the relevant data in the main database, which was suitable for classification and analysis. Management could easily identify the reason for frequently equipment’s disorder.

Effects
  1. The new system has improved the information system of the company. Thus, regular and effective inspection is possible.
  2. Risk of equipment failure drops significantly with timely inspection and service record of equipment.
  3. Real-time monitoring and inspection are possible now.
  4. Company has reduced the operational cost by optimum utilization of resources and employ less worker for the inspection process.
