Infrared Solution for Electric Meter Reading

BACKGROUND

Established in 2002, China Southern Power Grid Company Limited is the state-owned company invests in construction and operates power network in Guangdong, China. The company generates electricity through coal, natural gas, the hydro, nuclear, wind, and solar plants. Thus, also responsible for the supply and distribution of electricity in southern China's five southern provinces. The company followed a manual process of meter reading, which was time-consuming and subject to the errors. Finally, CSG implemented Infrared technology successfully in meter reading process.

CHALLENGES
  1. Company supply electricity to a large number of customers which increase the workload and expenses for a meter reading.
  2. Workers have to present at meter location for manually note down the meter reading.
  3. Chances of human errors have increased as data is stored manually in paper and computer.
SOLUTION

CSG consulted with Shenzhen Chainway Information Technology Co. about the issues. Thus, Chainway suggested its C71 Mobile Computer for meter reading automation. This mobile computer was enabled with Infra-Red technology which could record the meter reading from a distance. All the meters were installed with IR technology. However, in case of any meter unable to not transmit data through IR then these mobile computers could scan the 1D barcode printer on the meters. It ensured automatic meter identification. The data captured with the mobile computer could be transfer to the backend server immediately via a wireless network.

EFFECTS
  1. Automatic meter reading has reduced time and effort involved in the meter reading process.
  2. The new process has increased customer satisfaction because workers are not required to enter the customer premises for a meter reading.
  3. The mobile computers are connected via a wireless network with a power grid. Thus, real-time billing, complaints, and update are possible which makes the process fast and error free.
