Infra-Red Based Solution for Electric Meter Reading

BACKGROUND

The Nigerian Electricity company is one of the big companies engaged in power distribution in Nigeria. Company provide electricity supply to every household and use a manual method of meter reading which is insufficient and time-consuming.

CHALLENGES
  1. The Nigerian electricity company has a large number of consumers. So, the manual meter reading process is highly difficult.
  2. Manual meter reading process breach the privacy of customers because worker needs to enter the premises of customers.
  3. There is no real-time system to identify the status of meters. That is why management could not take timely action to solve the issues.
  4. The data is recorded on paper, which is subject to error and difficult to store.
SOLUTION

After testing many devices, the company chose Chainway’s C71 mobile computer for the meter reading process. These mobile computers are integrated with infrared features which can read all the meters with infrared features. Chainway’s C71 mobile computer communicate with infrared meters through transmitting infrared signals and instruct the meter software to share all the data with the server in real-time. This is how the automatic meter reading is possible now.

EFFECTS
  • The infra-red solution makes it more comfortable for workers to capture the meter reading from a distance. Now they do not need to climb or enter in customer premises.
  1. The physical labour work has also reduced significantly and resulted in work efficiency and accuracy.
  2. Now real-time data is available with management. Workers can check the status of any complaint and meter data at any time.
  3. GPS feature enables the management to track the workers in the field. This helps the company to ensure the availability of workers on the field.
