RFID Solution for Railway Track Inspection

Background
Deutsche Bahn or DB is a well-known railway company in Germany. The company was started in 1994 with private joint-stock where the Federal Republic of Germany is the single shareholder. With its widespread infrastructure and railway operations in Europe, the company is ranked second after DHL in terms of the transport network. DB has 34000 Km of railway track and 39000 trains which carry 2 billion passengers every year. This widespread network has brought some challenges too. Regular inspection and track maintenance are the important tasks in the list but a huge railway track has made this activity difficult to track. The manual inspection work is not practical now. Thus, the company has implemented a technology to improve the worker’s efficiency and quality of the inspection.
Challenges
  1. The company uses the manual method for inspection of tracks, which is time-consuming and subject to errors.
  2. Preparing the Inspection report takes lots of time because inspection records are maintained on paper and an officer has to enter all the data manually in the system.
  3. The status of maintenance can’t be shared in real-time with the administration.
Solutions
The Deutsche Bahn company choose Shenzhen Chainway Information Tech. Co. to provide its C5000 mobile computer for this solution. This multifunction device comes with a 2D barcode scanner and UHF RFID reader. The device updates the inspection work by reading the RFID tags pasted on the tracks. The worker is equipped with mobile computers and they receive assigned task this device. Therefore, railway administration received real-time updates about track maintenance, query, and feedback. C5000 mobile computer uses an inbuilt wireless network which transmits the data from device to railway server.
