Vehicle Management with Barcode and RFID technology

Background
Vehicles are the backbone of an oil field. Thus, production and maintenance of oilfield are dependent upon the transportation of raw material and finished products. If vehicles are not managed properly, it can affect productivity and safety in oil production. Chilean is a famous oilfield which had been facing vehicle management challenges for a long time. With the increase in production, the old method of manual management of vehicle was no longer effective. So, the company implemented a technical savvy solution for vehicle management.

Challenges
1. There is a large number of vehicles enter and exist in the oilfield facility every day. Manual recording of each vehicle with pen and paper is time-consuming and inefficient.
2. The vehicles run in the oilfield are not only trucks but a car and another type of vehicles as well. Tracking and managing all the vehicles are impossible in the current method.
3. Oilfield management has no access to real-time data related to the movement of vehicles in the oilfield. Thus, manual records do not give any basis for timely decision making.

Solution
To solve the issues, face by the oilfield, Chainway positioned its C5000 mobile computer in the oilfield company. The devices were integrated 2D barcode and an ultra-high-frequency RFID reader. The purpose of deploying these mobile computers was to manage vehicles with automatic vehicle registration. A unique identification barcode and RFID Tags were assigned to each vehicle. An operator at the gates just needed to scan the barcode and tag data with the help of mobile computer and feed the required input to update the data in the oilfield’s server. C5000 mobile computer used a wireless network to transmit the data to the server which help in presenting real-time data to the administration.

Effects
1 The vehicle's movement has significantly increased with automatic data capturing via mobile computers.
2. The operator’s work efficiency has improved because he does not need to note down vehicle number, vehicle type, etc. The mobile computer has made the process easy and error proof.
3. The solution ensures the availability of essential data all the time with concern department for critical decision making.
4. The new solution has also ensured proper vehicle management and improve oilfield productivity.
