Roll Call & Tool Management Solution with RFID Technology

Background
Workstation in prison includes many tools such as scissors, pliers, wrenches and cutter, etc which can be misused by prisons at any time. If these are not managed properly, could affect the prisoner’s security. The current method of tool management is not effective thus, a new solution is implemented in a prison.

Challenges
Prisoners management is not similar to personnel management. The authority has to consider the identity of prisoners and the traditional roll call is a time-consuming process. Many times, it is not possible for management to call the whole roll. Similarly, physical tool checking is also inefficient and could not guarantee 100% accuracy. However, a small breach in checking can result in big incidence.

Solution
To resolve these challenges and after the site’s inspection, Chainway suggested HF RFID technology. The prison was already using an information system which helped Chainway to integrate its RFID devices with the existing system. With the installation of prison data in the RFID Reader, an intelligent prison management solution was developed.

Application Details

Roll Call Management
Every prisoner was assigned with ID badges which carry complete information about the prisoner. The data of these badges were also installed in RFID handheld devices. At the time of roll call, a guard equipped with handheld could scan these badges and verify the availability of prison in roll call.

Information Transmission
These devices were connected with the main database via a wireless network. Thus, scan data shared on a real-time basis and administration updated with the latest information.

Tool Distribution
A registration process took place before handed over a tool to the prisoner. A guard scanned the prisoner badge and an RFID tag on tools to associate the tool with the respective prisoner.

Tool Returning
At the time of tool submission, a guard scanned the ID card of prisoner which display the list of registered tools in the name of a respective prisoner on a handheld screen. Guard also scan the prisoner’s tool. Thereafter, the system eliminates the tool from the registered tools list. When the tool return process completed, registered tools list displayed no item. In case any tools were shown then guard could easily identify the prisoner to whom a tool was allotted.

Effects
1. The RFID solution has simplified the Roll call and tool management process.
2. The system ensures 100% accuracy without any human error.
3. With real-time information sharing, administration can take immediate action in case of emergency.
4. Availability of prisoner’s data on handheld facilitate fast checking process and save lot of time.
