RFID Solution to Save the Rain Forest

Background
Maintaining an eco-system is very crucial for human survival and rainforest is the major part of it. Rainforest in Asia is majorly spread in the Philippines which cover approx. 53% for the total area. These forests include expensive wood such as sandalwood and ebony which has attracted many wood smugglers. Protecting this national treasure is a big challenge for the concerned department.

Solution
A solution is deployed with the integration of the internet of things, big data and other technology with RFID UHF tags. A tag is assigned to each tree with embedded information related to a particular tree. The forest officers can monitor these trees with the help of handheld UHF terminals, which are capable to read the RFID tags attached with trees from a long distance. These devices are not only connected with forest database via the wireless network but also provide real-time information for better decision making on ecological developments and statistical data for analysis. More classified data is available with functions such as remote sensing data, forest fire management, information extraction, etc.

Application Effects

1. With the implementation of RFID tag solution, now illegal activities such as wood smuggling, over-exploitation, illegal excavation have significantly reduced.
2. Complete tagging of the forest has been initiated with the help of RFID technology. With the result, the forest department has introduced various RFID based tickets such as transport certificate, harvesting certificate, collection certificate, etc to monitor the production, transportation, and sale of forest woods. Law enforcement is now much more effective than ever before.
