Material Handling Solution for an Automobile Company

Background
The automobile sector is always a backbone of Indian economy, Honda motorcycle is the I leading company in India in this segment which sells 4.28 million motorcycles and scooter in a year. With the increase in production and is the third-largest automobile after Hero and Bujaj, the company was facing unprecedented challenges in managing the inventory. Honda operates four warehouses in different locations in India where it needs to manage a huge inventory for motorcycle parts. So, the company realized a requirement of efficient warehouse management to manage inventory.

Challenges
1 The company had been using the barcode solution for the past few years. But this solution was not effective in term of speed as fixed barcode scanners were installed in the warehouses. These scanners were not portable and provide limited scanning speed.
2. Budget is the main factor for implementing any technology. Generally, warehouse solution required high-value solution and equipment which is difficult to justify in term of return on investment.

Solution
After the demonstration and demo of Chainway products at Honda motorcycle warehouse facilities, the company selected C4050 mobile computer as a cost-effective and best-performing device to improve the warehouse management. With the help of inhouse IT team, Honda motorcycle abled to integrate C4050 devices with existing inventory software. As all the spare part comes from different vendors, each item is labeled with a unique barcode and the items can be sorted out and stored at a specific location in a warehouse with the help of C4050 mobile computer. Furthermore, data capture with the help of mobile computer can be stored and update in main database in real-time which helps the management to keep track of any shortage or overstocking of parts.

Effects
1 These mobile computers proved to be a great help of smooth production. Mobile computer indicates the shortage of any items required on the production line in advance.
2. The new devices make the inventory process more accurate and faster which further reduce the operational and labour cost.
3. The system indicates the real-time visibility of material. So, the chances of missing items have marginalized.
