RFID Solution for Power Grid

Background
With the increase in demand for electric power, the power generation capacity of grids has also increased. Managing power grids and its assets now become a complex task and it cannot be performed manually. Assets are deployed in every department & distribution channel which is difficult to track and manage with traditional methods. This method often results in errors and mismanagement. Thus, the power grid has to deploy an RFID based automatic solution for managing the assets.

Challenges
1.  Inspection each of power asset is very important as it is costly and placed in the widespread distribution channel. But manual inspection is time-consuming and it involves high labour cost.
2. Manually recorded assets are actually mismatches with the real assets. These records could not be considered as 100% accurate. In the absence of accurate assets data, the misuse of expensive assets and equipment increases many folds.
3. The information collected in the manual process could not be updated in real-time. The management could not access the assets data in terms of making advance planning about replacement, maintenance, and requirement of assets and equipment.

Solution
Chainway supplies a collection of devices to Power Grid to maintain effective assets management with an intelligent solution. The devices mainly include C72, C76, P80 Tablet PC and R6 mobile computer. The RFID tags were assigned and attached to each asset. These tags contain every information of assets like name, date of purchase, location, etc. An operator responsible for the inspection could use these devices to capture and update the data stored in the tags. Besides this, the captured data can be uploaded to a central database that automatically classifies and create statistics for various departments.

Effects
1.  Inventory and inspection processes do not require a paper document anymore. The operator just needs to carry a PDA to capture the data. This process has significantly reduced the time and cost involved in inventory management.
2. Some assets are placed on long-distance or on height. The UHF RFID enabled devices to make it convenient for the operator to capture the data from a safe distance.
3.  With the GPS function, a real location of assets can be identified in real-time. This function ensures the top management that concerns a person has arrived in the location at a specific time.
4. Real-time information transmission helps the management to plan and take the advance action for replacement, maintenance, and purchase of new assets. So, the power supply should not be affected.
