RFID Based Assets Tracking Solution

Background
Huawei Terminal co. is the leading telecom company and a subsidiary of Huawei technologies co. The company offer a range of products and services that include Personal computers, tablets, Home terminals, mobile broadband terminal, etc. With the motive to introduce the latest technology for customers, the company is currently operated in more the 170 countries. The large size of organization has brought many challenges in the maintenance of assets. Thus, in order to improve the assets management, the company deployed the latest intelligent solution based on RFID technology within the organization.

Challenges
1. Huawei assets are located in different geographical areas and its maintenance cost is very high due to the manual process.
2. High operational efficiency depends upon the smooth functioning of assets. Huawei was facing the problem of recording the accurate data of assets related to purchasing, maintenance, and depreciation, etc. The unavailability of this information affects the decision-making ability of top management for the timely replacement of assets.
3. Employee assessment and skill development are not possible in the absence of real-time data.
4. Equipment failure could not be fixed in time and it is very difficult to resolve the case of assets misuse or theft as data is not available in real-time.

Solutions
The RFID solution was implemented in every branch of the company across the globe. The main components of the solution were RFID mobile reader, UHF RFID tags and a customized application. The tags were assigned to each asset with the embedded information that contains purchase date, expire date, maintenance schedule, etc. The operator can realize and update the asset data just by reading the tags attached to the assets. A customized software enables the devices to share, classified and save the data in the main database.

Effects
1.  From the procurement to the end of life, each asset is automatically tracked and maintained.
2. The RFID solution has reduced the workload and cost of assets management as a single person can be assigned to maintain all the assets at a single location.
3. Now, the accuracy of data and records can be ensured because data capturing and recording is done electronically and with minimum human interruption.
4. Better utilization of assets is possible with proper tracking that ensures the availability of high-value assets at the time it is required.
