RFID Devices for Assets Management

Background
Shanghai Public security bureau has deployed RFID technology to effectively manage its fixed assets. Following the mismanagement and poor maintenance of assets that have brought the financial losses to the company, Shanghai public security replaced manual process with the installation of handheld RFID devices and RFID tags to facilitate intelligent and standard process of assets management. With the result, company has not only improved the work efficiency but also reduce the time and labour cost involved in assets management.

Challenges
1. The traditional method of assets management is inefficient and could not be considered accurate. The reason being, all the data are recorded on paper manually which involve high chance of manipulation and errors.
2. Employee’s performance evaluation is very difficult as all the work perform manually. Management could not ensure if worker has actually performed the inspection work at the site.
3. Effective policy development and maintenance schedule could not be realized due to unavailability of real-time data for top management. Administration could not evaluate the real condition of assets.

Solution
The C72 UHF RFID handheld devices which were deployed by Shanghai Public security bureau were supplied by the Chainway. The devices integrated with the asset’s management application were responsible to read RFID tags allocated to each asset. These tags record all the information related to particular asset such as purchase date, price, expiry, maintenance history, approx. life etc. Worker assigned for the inspection work can quickly update and scan the asset’s information and upload on central database with the help of wireless network. The is readily available for all the concern departments in real-time which helps in taking quick action in term of policy making and maintenance schedule of assets.

2. The new system ensures the quality of maintenance work as workers are in close loop that include work planning, task confirmation and execution of inspection work.
3. Management able to reduce the operational cost by preventing the incident of breakdown and ensure the availability of required asset on time.
