RFID Solution for IT Assets Management

BACKGROUND
As China has become a great IT market for the whole world. One of the leading company called China Mobile has already developed a number of IT computer rooms that support operation and data analysis for the company. However, there are many assets placed in the computer room such as servers which are needed to be properly maintained. With the motive to improve efficiency and inventory management, the company implemented UHF RFID mobile computers.

CHALLENGES
1. China Mobile has number of computer rooms located at various locations and each computer room has expensive assets. Tradition method such as a handwritten document is inefficient and time-consuming.
2. Supervision work cannot be initiated effectively due to the manual processes. Thus, management can not ensure if the inspection process is followed in the computer room.
3. Real-time data of maintenance work is not available for management. It affects the efficiency of top management to plan in advance about the replacement, purchase and schedule maintenance of assets to avoid the possibility of a sudden breakdown.

SOLUTIONS
After a detailed discussion with the management, Chainway proposed a C72 Mobile computer with UHF RFID reader capability. These mobile devices were capable to transmit the data through a Wi-Fi network. Further, all the assets in computer rooms were also linked with RFID tags that store the assets data such as purchase date, maintenance schedule, location assigned, etc. An operator just read the tags with a mobile device to obtain, update and transmit the information in real-time.

EFFECTS
1. RFID solution makes the inspection process standard and simple. C72 device offers a fast and high reading ranges which make the process less time consuming and accurate.
2. Management is able to automate the data process. Now data that is captured via mobile computer can be transmitted in real-time, then classified and create report automatically. Management gets the complete details of assets and steps which are required to take for the proper functioning of assets.
3. Now the system can define the responsibility of each person involved in the assets management process. At the time of any fault, a responsible person can be quickly identified. The way, the company has significantly improved worker performance and reduce the losses occur due to careless work behavior.
