Parts Management with RFID Technology

Background
Industry 4.0 concept which refers to the fourth industrial revolution is the automation in the manufacturing process that includes cyber-physical systems (CPS), the internet of things (IoT), industrial internet of things (IIOT), cloud computing. Germany which is considered as a leader in automobiles technology encourages the adoption of this technology in the manufacturing and warehouse process. That how the BMW company identify and implemented the latest technology to achieve full automation in the plant. One of the pain areas of BMW corporation was to manage auto parts which are why to automate this process, BMW and Chainway corporate to deploy C72 UHF mobile computers in the inventory process.

Challenges
1. BMW has a large production lines and each production line has a number of auto parts. Managing all the auto parts manually is a time consuming and ineffective process.
2. It was highly difficult to identify the specific part location in manual process.
3. Actual spare parts could be varying from books records which make the manual process in reliable and error-prone.
4. Management could not access to the real-time inventory that make it impossible to stop the incidence of stolen material.
5. Spare part requirement and consumption analysis could not be effectively managed with manual records which affect the decision-making ability of management.

Solution
To effectively manage the auto parts on production line, BMW management discussed internally and selected Chainway C72 UHF mobile computer to realize the automatic parts management. The solution includes RFID cards which are needed to be pasted on each auto part with complete information. Whenever any auto part enters and exits the warehouse, an operator equipped with a mobile computer can automatically identify the material and update the central data with entry or exit of auto parts. C72 mobile computer facilitates a wireless network that is used to transfer the captured data to the main database in real-time.

Effects
1. BMW management has significantly reduced the manual process. With the result, an input-output operation is improved.
2. Misuse and misplacement of the auto parts have also reduced as RFID solutions can automatically track the parts whenever taken in and out from the warehouse.
3. RFID system make the inventory so fast that large number of items can be read at a time.
4. With the help of a mobile computer, management has reduced the operation cost. Now fewer workers are required in inventory management.
