RFID Asset Tracking for Hangzhou Metro Line 5

Background

The rapid development of urban rail transit has brought great convenience to people's travel. Management faces many problems in the subway-supported asset management of Hangzhou, which includes operation & maintenance management of Line 1, Line 2, and Line 4. The Line 5 management team consciously pointed out the importance & improvement in subway asset and inventory management. Thus, they proposed the use of RFID technology to solve the long-running asset inventory problem.

Challenges

1. There is often an unconformity between the physical quantity of equipment items and the background data. The account records are inconsistent with the physical ones.
2. There is no information recording system for each equipment asset. The equipment itself can not be traced to the source and is difficult to manage and maintain.
3. The traditional method for the assets inventory takes three months in a year and highly prone to errors.

Solution

The management team of Hangzhou Metro configured the Chainway C72 handheld RFID reader to manage assets. Each asset is assigned with a unique RFID electronic tag. Subsequently, the deployment of mobile devices significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of asset cycle-counting. Asset stock-taking workers can conduct inventory inspection of assets owned by the subway operating company with the C72 device. Meanwhile, the automated system uploads the data to the server. Once managers grasp the status of the assets, they quickly implement the timely tracking of asset status. It is convenient for managers to execute maintenance plans and ensuring a smooth & accurate operation.

Effects

1. The application of UHF RFID technology has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of asset stock-taking.
2. The worker carries a PDA instead of paper documents to conduct an intelligent inspection of assets, which is flexible and costs effective.
3. The inventory information can be transmitted to the back-end system through a network, which provides the managers with the channel to maintain the asset on time.
4. The new system realizes real-time traceability and equipment management operation. It ensures stable operation of the subway.
