Warehouse Management for Swiggy with Chainway C66 Handheld Computer

This case study is about India's fastest-growing food delivery company known as Swiggy. The company was founded back in 2014 by Nandan Reddy and Sriharsha Majety. Prior to this, they started their first start-up company called Bundl, which was a courier service providing company for small and medium enterprises. After running this business for one year, they focused on the food delivery business. Subsequently, they transformed the courier service company into a food delivery company in August 2014. Swiggy started with just one space in Bangalore, six delivery executives, and 25 local restaurant partners. Today, the start-up has scaled up to 12000 partner restaurants, 13000 delivery executives, and business presence in big cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune etc.
In the entire journey, Swiggy has introduced and rebuilt multiple systems to serve other items like groceries. It helps the customers to order everyday grocery items from one single app.
Swiggy recently launched the InstaMart service through the same channel. The company launched this service currently in Gurgaon & Bangalore. This includes delivery of groceries and other household items within 45 minutes. For faster deliveries across the supply chains, Swiggy implemented barcode technology in the warehouses. Thus, the company chose Chainway C66 mobile computer to facilitate a prompt order processing system.

Challenges in InstaMart service

  • High Catchment Area – Swiggy has a large catchment area that a driver covers to deliver grocery items. In a city like Bangalore, the radius of the catchment area is around 5-6 km. Thus, the company realized a fast pickup process that can ensure the delivery within 45 minutes.
  • Meeting the unmet Grocery Need – Swiggy has already tied-up with other FMCG goods providers including Vishal mega mart. Besides this, Swiggy launched InstaMart to target convenience customers for their unmet grocery requirements. Therefore, management must ensure the availability of these items in the warehouses.
  • Sorting a wide range of items -Swiggy needs to sort a wide range of items daily that includes perishable food items like instant meals, snacks, ice creams, beverages, fruits, and vegetables for a limited period. This can not be achieved in a manual process.
  • Better services for customers – Swiggy faces tough competition from other grocery suppliers like BigBasket, Amazon, Reliance JioMart, etc. The delivery of the right item to the right customer within a stipulated period is essential for a better customer experience and to stay ahead in the competition.

Process
Like other warehousing management, Swiggy also implemented a mobile computer-based warehouse management solution in warehouses. The primary objective of this solution is to sort the grocery items, store them in a facility systematically, and assign the items with the customer order received with a barcode-based mobile computer. The functionality of this process depends upon the usage of Mobile computers. Thus, Swiggy corporated with Chainway India to supply its best Mobile computer for the inventory management process. Chainway C66 Mobile computers were procured and deployed in the Swiggy warehouses by the management. After assigning a unique barcode, every item is stored at a defined rack. Mobile computers are integrated with an in-house warehouse management application. Once, warehouse operator receives an order, a mobile computer guide the operator to locate the required items in the warehouse. By using the mobile computer, the operator can scan the items and assign the specific order for the delivery. The whole process works on a real-time basis and store in a central database. Even customers can track the order, driver name, and time of delivery on their mobile in real-time.
Besides, Swiggy mention grocery items with barcode in its recipe books. A customer can order all the ingredients just by scanning the barcode with the mobile phone.

Benefits
  • The new system helps Swiggy to double the volume with which they can deliver tons of products within a stipulated frame of time. Now, Swiggy stores and delivers more than 2500 different grocery items to the customers.
  • Swiggy data platform is the house of all the data related to customer order, inventory, and dispatch data that flow through the network. Mobile computer plays an important role in updating and storing this data in real-time.
  • Swiggy achieves its objective of scalability and availability. Barcode solution offers a fast delivery process which further reduces the delivery time with high customer satisfaction. Satisfied customers converted into loyal customers and placed repetitive orders.
  • The system ensures the availability of demanded items all the time as real-time data helps Swiggy management to identify a low volume of a stock in advance.
