RFID-based Intelligent Production Management at CATL

Background

CATL is the world's leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries. However, the production of lithium-ion batteries has the problem of complex processes, long processes, many control points, large data volumes, and various testing methods. These aspects have caused companies to face challenges such as poor controllability and low efficiency of the production process.

Challenges

  • The product process is complex and there are many steps, workers may make mistakes during the production process;
  • Information such as production materials, batches, quality, and inventory cannot be collected timely and effectively, managers can not control production materials in real-time;
  • The manufacturing process is lengthy, and management personnel in production scheduling, product tracking, quality control, equipment failure, etc. cannot track in real-time and unify production scheduling;
  • The production information is not timely and accurate, which makes it difficult for managers to track and analyze the overall production situation and further optimization.

Solution

  • The lithium battery production management system based on RFID technology has enhanced information management and services. This system can clearly grasp the production process, improve the controllability of the production process, reduce manual intervention on the production line, accurately collect production line data in real time, and optimize production planning and progress.
  • RFID tags are installed on the carriers in the production line, product information is written into the RFID tags, and they are bound with the products. RFID readers are installed at the material loading and unloading ends of the corresponding procedures on the production line;
  • When the carriers with the RFID tags enter the RFID process, the RFID readers read the tag data on the products. After data is collected, it will be sent to the system for data collection, analysis, and statistics;
  • Using a unified database, the system can be use for production scheduling, product tracking, quality control, equipment fault analysis, network reports, and other management. Through network connection, it can provide workshop management information services to production departments, quality inspection departments, process departments, logistics departments, etc. Finally, it aids the company in implementing complete closed-loop production through overall process optimization, realizing intelligent manufacturing and management.

Outcomes

  • Using RFID tags as carriers, paired with RFID readers, allows for real-time collection of logistics, production, and quality information, increasing the visibility of material information;
  • It tracks the materials in product production, records and analyses production line processing, equipment, operators, quality, etc., and takes appropriate action. According to material batch, production time, etc., it traces the products material and their storage and shipment information;
  • It effectively prevents manual errors during material loading and process omissions during production;
  • Real-time collection of substandard quality data and pre-warning of inferior situations are provided. Continuous product quality improvements are made based on analysis of production and quality data.
